Coral Garden Progress

The Coral Garden is slowly expanding. Some pieces are finished and others are still in the experimental stage. They have been photographed sitting on a disc from a whale's spine. Unfortunately, the magnificent beast perished and landed on the reef. I tried to get some ribs too but they were too large and heavy to carry home.

All the pieces have been made from my re-used tapestry wool stash.

the first coral looks as if it is growing right out of that bone.
here in the US we aren't allowed to keep pieces of marine mammals unless of course we are native. It's hard to pass up the dead seals on the beach, but with a Fish and Game truck right behind you you have no choice...

This work is wonderful and the whale bones work so well with the pieces. I love the way coral is also calcium, so it makes such sense, yet when you first look at the work there seems such a tension between softness of the wool and the hardness of bone.

MATE!

That is some disc!

Nice work, too.

oh my god i can't believe you have pieces of whalebone - that you salvaged yourself! i'm so jealous

btw, theres really no need to send me anything!!! Im so pleased to help with such a great project!!

just beautiful Helle!!
And your background 'props' are amazing!!

Thanks Jude. I have been contemplating for a long time how to display these pieces.......perhaps I have stumbled across something here.

these are absolutely magnificent, the pieces just sing with the setting. i can't get enough!
