Busily working away at items for the Entropy Collection, however, as expected I veer off on tangents to try new things......
Driftwood and bones with hemp crocheted details. Two sculptures by Jade Pegler in the middle.
One of my first wonky baskets and a couple of driftwood/crochet pieces.
The Diatom Collection has expanded.
The sun is back, then it's gone and it's still very wet. I guess that's why it's called the rainy season!
In the studio:
A little 10 x 10 cm embroidery of nodules.
I've been working on the "Entropy collection". An expanded version will be exhibited at the Tweed River Regional Art Gallery at the end of the year. It will be exhibited as an installation pinned to the wall, approximately 4 x 1.5m in size. This exhibition has now expanded into a full solo exhibition and I'm trying to bring various pieces together to form a cohesive whole. A public program, as part of the exhibition, is also being organized.
It's been three months.............
There were so many things to do I had to focus my attention on the real world.
Now to catch up:
A small collection of twenty explorative sculptures currently being shown in a group exhibition at mister jones until May 20.
More to come in the next few days. Hope you are all well and happy.
The latest creation came off the hook yesterday.
The Retail Reef, 2010.
40x28cm.
Discarded Plastic shopping bags.
This piece is being entered in the Border Art Prize. A local art prize open to artists from the surrounding shires. The finalists will be exhibited at the Tweed River Regional Gallery. Hopefully it will get in........ fingers crossed.
I managed to find the sea urchin fossil I mentioned in an earlier post, in the garden. I've had it for a long time and it's really very precious. It needs a special safe position where it can be admired.
Some publishing news for the record......
Green Design, 2010. Braun Publishing. Stuttgart, Germany.
Making Art Connections, Chris Bates, 2010. McGraw Hill. Australia and New Zealand.
Festival of Textile Art and Craft. Ekaterinburg Museum of Folk Art, Russia.
I mention it here so that I don't forget. I'm thrilled to think that my work will be seen in Russia, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. It never ceases to amaze me how the internet makes it possible to make connections across the world
The Gooseflesh Lab is open for business. I decided to open a new shop to replace my Etsy shop. The Etsy shop interface can be difficult to navigate for new buyers and I never liked the Etsy banner. So the Gooseflesh Lab will be a new shop to sell experimental things I make.
A blue T-bag:
Made from T-shirt yarn, stash fabric and a couple of crocheted buttons.
A bag full of "Gooseflesh" labels has been sitting in my box of trims and ribbons for approx. 25 years........ yes, I'm not kidding. I had them made when I was sewing some clothes as a very young chappy.
Some pouches made from plastic detritus and beach collection fabric:
A plastic detritus pouch with zip and a curious blue weevil looking for a cosy home.
A beach collection pouch with zip and grey felted zip-pull. Lined with driftwood coloured linen.
A homemade portfolio containing six plastic detritus hand-coloured linoprints heading for the Grafton Regional Gallery print night 23.9.10 and three pouches for the Gallery shop.
...........and finally today's harvest:
Cos lettuce, sebago potatoes, turmeric, peanuts, bean seeds and the last of the cherry tomatoes.
Phew!
The following sculptures arrived safely at gallery hanahou, for the exhibition, Lost at Sea. I was a little concerned that they wouldn't arrive in time because of the volcanic ash in the atmosphere. Thankfully the sculptures flew over the North Pacific so I need not have worried. Actinia was a WIP last time I posted a photo of it. So here it is finished. These pieces will be for sale in the gallery.

There is something about the malleability and textures of fabric, thread, and yarn that speaks of the sea and its many mysteries.
Curated by Kristen Rask of Schmancy and "Plush You," "Lost at Sea" gathers 32 exciting artists who share underwater visions of items lost, creatures forgotten, and life that struggles to stay with us. The show will feature a broad array of amusing and uncanny works in embroidery, plush, and other materials.
